
Keeping Your Wafers Clean When Using CNT Heaters
If you’re working with carbon nanotube (CNT) fabrication, you know the drill. You need those high-intensity infrared lamps to hit the exact temperatures for catalyst activation. But here’s the catch: when you’re pushing these lamps hard in a high-volume production run, things can go sideways. A lamp rupture is a nightmare. It’s not just about the production line grinding to a halt. You’ve got quartz shards and halogen gas raining down on your wafer. One pop, and your entire batch is trash. Dealing with the risk of pops Most “burn outs” aren’t random. They usually happen because of mechanical stress at the pinch seal or those annoying localized hot spots. To stop this, we went with heavy-wall quartz tubing and reinforced seals. It basically means the lamps can take a beating during rapid thermal cycling without giving up. But we didn’t stop there. We also added a protective containment shield. Think of it as a safety net. If a tube does fail, the shield catches the debris so the glass never even touches your substrate. It keeps the mess isolated and your wafer safe. The heat density struggle High-wattage IR lamps get the job done, but they put a massive strain on your power supply and cooling rails. I’ve seen people spec a system for 250W per lamp, then try to shave a few minutes off the cycle by running them at 110% capacity. Don’t do that. You’re just killing your filaments faster. And please, make sure your cooling fans actually match your heat output. If the lamp ends get too hot, the quartz softens. It starts to deform, and then—you guessed it—it ruptures. Keeping things running When a lamp finally does go, you don’t want your techs spending an hour fumbling with wiring while the clock is ticking. We use standardized connectors so you can just drop in a replacement. Swap the tube, recalibrate the PID controller, and you’re back in business. Just a heads-up: if you’re replacing a single lamp in an older array, you might see a temporary temperature imbalance across the wafer. It takes a little while for that new filament to stabilize, so just keep an eye on it.
