
Why we try to break our bathroom heaters in a steam room
Bathrooms are brutal. Between the thick steam, the sudden temperature jumps, and constant water vapor, it’s basically a torture chamber for electronics. If you just check to see if a lamp turns on and call it a day, you’re asking for trouble. That’s why we don’t just “test” our infrared lamps. We put every batch into a humid chamber and push them until they give up.
The problem with steam
Here is the thing about water vapor: it finds a way. It sneaks through the tiniest gaps in seals and housing. Once that moisture gets inside the quartz envelope or hits the electrical contacts, things go south. The metal starts to oxidize. That creates resistance, which creates heat, and eventually, the lamp just burns out way before it should. Nobody wants to deal with a dead heater in the middle of winter.
How we actually test them
We throw these units into cycles of intense heat and humidity. It’s essentially a time machine that simulates months of wear and tear in a fraction of the time. We’re hunting for two big red flags: First, we check if the insulation holds up. If the housing is soaked, we need to be sure the current isn’t leaking. Then, we look at the terminals. If the metal is pitting or rusting under the steam, we know we have a problem. We keep pushing until something snaps. It’s the only way to know if those waterproof gaskets are actually doing their job or if they’ll just peel off after six months of hot showers.
The balancing act
It sounds simple—just seal it tighter, right? Not exactly. If we seal the unit too aggressively, we trap the heat inside. The components basically cook themselves. It’s a constant tug-of-war between keeping the moisture out and letting the heat escape so the driver doesn’t fry. We spend a lot of time finding that sweet spot. At the end of the day, it means you can install these without worrying that the first hot shower of the season is going to trip the breaker. We do the dirty work and the stressful testing so the install is just… easy.
