
Why we stopped sealing our outdoor heaters shut
Let’s be honest: the outdoors is brutal on gear. Between the humidity, the dust, and those crazy temperature swings, infrared heating elements eventually give out. It just happens. The problem? Most IP65-rated heaters are sealed so tight that if one tube burns out, you’re basically staring at a brick. To fix one part, you have to tear the whole chassis apart. It’s a nightmare. So, we decided to change how these things are built. We went modular.
The “Swap and Go” Approach
Instead of hard-wiring everything into one giant power grid, we treated the heating elements like Lego bricks. We built isolated heating modules that just snap into the housing. We use precision gaskets and quick-connect terminals to keep things tight. Here’s why that actually matters: if a tube dies after five years, you aren’t spending your afternoon rewiring a machine. You just pull the dead module out, pop in a new tube, and slide it back in.No messy silicone, no industrial sealants, and no worrying if you accidentally broke the waterproof seal.
The Honest Trade-offs
Now, nothing is perfect. Adding modules means adding more connection points, and more connections can mean more things that might go wrong if they aren’t seated right. To fix that, we used gold-plated pins. They stop the humid air from eating away at the contacts. And yeah, the heater is a few centimeters larger than a permanently sealed unit. You lose a tiny bit of space, but you gain the ability to fix the thing in the field without a meltdown. It’s a trade I’ll make every single time.
Making Life Easier for the Techs
This also changes who has to do the repairs. You don’t need to fly in a senior electrical engineer just to get the heat back on. Any technician can do it. They just follow the alignment pins, lock the fasteners, and they’re done. It’s fast. Really fast. And it means your heaters get back to full strength without anyone risking the waterproof rating of the whole box.
