
Keeping Your Infrared Table Heaters Dry (and Safe)
If you’re putting infrared lamps in a bathroom or a damp factory floor, you’ve got a problem: water. Vapor, splashes, the whole bit. It’s a nightmare for electronics. Most standard heaters will just short out or start leaking current the moment things get humid. That’s why we build our table heaters to IP55 standards.
Why IP55 Actually Matters
When people see “IP55,” they usually just think of a plastic box. But it’s more than that. It means the unit can handle dust and those annoying low-pressure water jets coming from any angle. We don’t just throw a shell over it and hope for the best. We use sealed gaskets and reinforced cable glands to make sure moisture never even gets close to the electrical terminals. To really nail the insulation, we focus on the gap between the heating element and the chassis. We use high-temp ceramic insulators and special moisture-resistant potting at the connection points. This stops “tracking”—that’s when moisture creates a little bridge for electricity to jump across. It’s the main reason most bathroom heaters fail and trip your breakers.
The Battle Against Heat and Shrinkage
Here’s the tricky part: heat makes things grow. Inside a waterproof heater, the lamp hits several hundred degrees, but the seal has to stay tight. If you use cheap materials, they bake, crack, and fail. Once that happens, steam sneaks in, turns back into water droplets, and—boom—your circuit shorts. We use silicone-based seals. They don’t care about the heat. They just keep working, cycle after cycle.
The Trade-off
Now, I’ll be honest with you. Waterproofing comes with a small price. Because we’re putting a protective lens or grill between the IR source and whatever you’re heating, you lose a tiny bit of that radiant energy. It’s not a dealbreaker, but it’s something to keep in mind. If you’re aiming for a very specific surface temperature, just bump up the wattage a little. It compensates for that extra layer of protection and ensures you still get the heat you need.
